Traditional British pub dishes

"The Poulton Elk • JD Wetherspoon" in Poulton-le-Fylde, England, is a typical example of the popular British pub chain J D Wetherspoon, known for its affordable cuisine and generous opening hours. The pub, which opened in 2013, is located in a building that previously served as a nightclub and was on the site of a former telephone exchange. It is named after a fascinating archaeological discovery: in 1970, the nearly complete skeleton of a prehistoric elk was excavated nearby, dating back approximately 13,500 years and showing signs of hunting weapons— a find that proves the earliest known presence of hunters this far north in Britain.

Wetherspoon pub with history

The menu at "Poulton Elk" offers a wide range of classic British dishes that reflect the typical Wetherspoon style. Particularly popular is the "Fish and Chips," featuring freshly breaded cod fillets served with crispy chips and a side of mushy peas— a dish that combines both tradition and quality. For meat lovers, the "Sirloin Steak" stands out, grilled to juicy perfection and served with sides like onion rings and coleslaw. The "Chicken Tikka Masala" is also a favorite, offering a spicy twist on the British-Indian classic, served with rice and naan bread. Vegetarian options, such as the "Five Bean Chilli" bowl, provide a hearty alternative with bold flavors and fresh ingredients. For dessert, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding," a warm, sweet sponge cake with toffee sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, makes for the perfect end to a meal.

For those seeking something lighter, non-alcoholic options like mocktails or traditional sodas are also available.

Had breakfast here last week and couldn't be more impressed. Food was good and we all know Wetherspoons are great value but the thing that stood out over others is the impressively quick service (ordered on App and cups for coffee delivered in about a minute) and also how clean it was. They cleared our plates right away. Just all round attentive service. You could say 'well so it should be', but that often isn't the case unfortunately (especially at a Wetherspoons) so we'll done to them. I look forward to coming back and highly recommend others try them too.

I drink real ale and I love the selection on offer...... But....... They can't pour it for toffee. All the staff need to learn how to pull a proper pint. You wouldn't hire a decorator and expect them to hang wallpaper with a pritt stick. Please please please teach you staff to leave a head on the pint.

Want to say a massive shout out to the lady who assisted someone who was having a medical emergency this morning at the elk! she was so comforting towards the gentleman, provided him lots of reassurance and made sure the emergency services was called asap, I’m not sure her name but I think she was manager on duty. She deserves a reward!

First time visit called in for something to eat on our way home from St Anne's....friendly staff and served quickly via the app even though it was quite busy....would certainly call again when in the area. Called in again today,(19/1/25) food and service very good... sadly not many tables had been cleared which is not very inviting.

Regularly meet here with friends for breakfast. Good selection of breakfast choices and vegetarian options. Pub is always warm and clean. Breakfast and endless coffee for just over £5, you can't go wrong. Car parking behind, which is a public car park, so charges do apply. Friendly staff.
